How to chat with PDFs in your own language — Hindi, Spanish & more
Most AI PDF chat tools assume English. You upload an English PDF, you ask in English, you get English back. That excludes a lot of the world. How multilingual PDF chat works under the hood
DocuMind uses two systems together:
- Embeddings — your question and document chunks are turned into multilingual vectors, so a question in Hindi can still match an English passage by meaning, not by exact words.
- Generation — the model is instructed to reply in the same language and script you used for the question, regardless of the PDF’s language.
This means you can upload an English HR policy and ask about it entirely in Hindi, Hinglish, Spanish, French, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Arabic, etc. The retrieval still hits the right English paragraph; the answer comes back in your language.

Prompt patterns that work best across languages
1. Be explicit if you want a specific output language
Reply in formal Hindi (Devanagari script). Don't switch to English unless you're quoting from the document.
2. Ask for the original quote alongside the translation
Translate the answer into Spanish. Then quote the exact English sentence from the PDF that supports it.
This dramatically reduces translation drift on legal text.
3. Mix languages on purpose
For a glossary that names English terms (like “PTO”, “EOD”, “stand-up”), it’s usually clearer to keep those terms in English even when the explanation is in Hindi or Spanish. Tell DocuMind that explicitly.
What still goes wrong sometimes
- Mixed-script PDFs. A scanned PDF that has Hindi text as images needs OCR support; quality varies. Re-export the PDF as text-selectable if possible.
- Very specialized terms. Tax / medical jargon may not have an idiomatic translation; DocuMind will keep the original term and add a short note.
- Right-to-left scripts. Arabic and Hebrew render correctly in chat, but copy-pasting into your own UI may need RTL CSS handling.
